Grass (duub)wreath

It was the week before Diwali festival the day was holiday. The holiday bug hit me and i’ve been feeling like creating, making sweets, and nestling in my little and cozy house. All our house was renovated except the paint on the outer wall.it also done on that day and i was free from....to send for taking something or other ..dealing with painter, carpenter, mason or labor etc....... I tried to curl-on sofa ..watching tv but the ..unrest of.....something...to create....

Then i created this wreath .for the front door (there are two of them)..while sitting ....in front verandah... it looks best on white mesh door, recently painted.this grass wreath looks great with nevi blue, blue and blue polkadot fabric strips. Is’nt it?

This is my new ...first...and festive ....wreath on my door. In india the wreath deco or custom is not there.

Though the design is mine own, but i got inspiration many...many...designers of the wreaths in their respective blogs. I’ve had this one (not this design but wreath of any kind) on my agenda for ages(since i got cached with their beauty in the blogger world).

I like saving money by finding ways to decorate my home with the things in hand junks or anything old and weary. When i came across this heap of grass i loved it! Making of a wreath was in my mind since long .

What is Doob Grass?

Doob grass is a prostrate and highly branched perennial grass. It is a very important herb as it is used in treatment of various diseases. Whole plant is used for medicine. The botanical name of Doob grass is Cynodon dactylon and it belongs to the family Poaceae. The Ayurvedic name for the herb is Yav Kul and it has various other names such as Conch grass and Durva etc.

Doob grass has various chemical constituents like protein, enzymes and ash. The ash contains phosphorus, calcium, sodium, manganese and potassium. The herb is pitta and kapha suppressant. It helps in healing of wounds, improving skin texture and brain functioning. It has various other benefits.Doob grass is used in Pooja too.

I'm happy with the way it turned out, and had fun decorating it on the other day. The Doob was quite dry. I haven't made any type of wreath, i acquainted with wreath through inter-net only, and making it took me on a little stroll down Memory Lane.

My dad farmed agri land of dry-land crop when he retired and settled in our ancestral village. I remember running through the fields, spending hours playing outside. We kids also helped a lot out in the fields, doing various tasks for my dad. I say we helped "a lot" but actually, it probably wasn't that much, except to weed out the Doob grass which was then used for fodder for our milch cow.

One of the things we learned to do was make ropes of busheses like kheep and bui and kharsna . I made several, and my grandma asked me to make a for her biloni(curd pot) and kadhavni(milk pot).
I got the Doob grass from our front park. The park was sheven few days back and the gardener needed rid of it and he might be wiling to burn it. I thought it would be fun to make a wreath, so I responded to the gardener, and got what I thought was a lot of Doob. However, by the time I got done with my wreath, I had used lots of the grass.

Any how this little project was so easy to make... and free of cost at least i didn't bought anything new for it. As i described before hand....while going for walk in our front park, i noticed dry grass...lots of heaps lying...i took a heap as large as my two hand hold in one time.

For my wreath form, I used a grain sac and pressure cooker gasket that I had on hand.

My mom helped me making the basic round structure with twine, grass and two pressure gaskets(discarded ones) we made roles of the grass and wrap them around the gaskets and tighten them with winding with twine. This was the first step.

In the second step, i used some leftover fabric scraps (in navy blue, blue, and white with blue small dots) from another projects to wind around the wreath (about1/4 inch wide and 1-11/2 foot in length). I ripped all the strips rather then cutting them to create a ragged look.

On third step i cut little wide (2-21/2 inch wide strips of navy blue and white with blue dot fabric, and make roses out of them, laid them on the wreath to see where to fit them.
I used-copper wire to attach the roses, and it seemed to work very well. I added a some hot glue here and there, but not much! The navy blue flower is little bit big then the other one because of bulky fabric otherwise the size of the strips were same. Also i selvedges two buttons from my son’s shirts covered them with fabric using needle and thread and put them in the center of each roses using glue.

I made a small twine out of the same fabric strips and secure at the top to hung the wreath on the door...

And a beautiful wreath was created in one run...of course my mother’s help was great otherwise it may took ,,,,,,,some more time...

This wreath is already hanging on the front door.

Happy day!!
